In fact it might just help you in running those extra miles more than the target that you have set for yourself. What exactly happens is that caffeine heightens your alertness while reducing your perception of pain. This enables you to exercise more before you get exhausted that in turn makes you burn fat faster. Coffee is the best stimulant that affects your adrenal (fight or flight) glands and makes you stay alert.

Less Caffeine, More health

General studies indicate that coffee consumers do tend to lose weight over a period of time but the weight-loss is not very significant. And coffee must definitely not be considered to be a weight-loss agent. Caffeine is a wonderful substance that when taken in moderation stimulates our brain activity. The ideal caffeine intake depends on a case-by-case basis and cannot be determined in general. 3 to 4 cups a day is what would suit 80% of the people. And as for weight loss, diet and exercise are the only tools to be used. There is no other short cut to a fab body and a sound mind. Eating Habits Dictated by Stress and Anxiety are Unhealthy

How often have you binged on yummy fast food without really feeling hungry? Then it is time to analyze the quality of your lifestyle that you are leading. Research shows that women who experience higher stress levels are more prone to becoming obese than their no-stress counterparts. Women who are totally burned out due to stress, anxiety, and depression, tend to eat in excess, more out of habit than out of hunger. The main reason for this behavior is the general comfort feeling that they get out of food. This behavior is called ‘Emotional Eating’ and those engaging in it can ‘burn out.’ The upside to it is the feeling of comfort, while the downside is the tendency to become obese, and a reluctance to adopt healthy eating.

The Underlying Logic in Emotional Eating

The results gathered from a survey of people lists some reasons why women start eating comfort food. Most of the time, it is how we feel, that decides our determination to eat healthy food. So negative feelings emerging out of unemployment, work-life balance, stress and anxiety at home, work related pressure etc may fuel the consumption of comfort food. A widely distributed survey also reveals that when you are happy, pizza or steak may be a popular choice. When you are depressed, cookies, chocolates or ice-creams may tempt you. At times when you are bored, potato chips beckon you.

Also emotional eating turns out to be a vicious cycle where you might eat unhealthy to relax and feel at peace. And the same food might actually leave you a tad glum. When this cycle continues unbroken, obesity is its direct consequence. Studies show that women who continuously consume comfort food are more reluctant to give it up for better habits than those who are not so much under stress.

How do we adopt healthy living?

One of the first steps to switch to a healthy diet is to identify true hunger and pseudo-hunger. Emotional hunger is like a sudden pang of hunger where as physical hunger mounts gradually. Eating in spite of your stomach being full is due to your effort to soothe those negative feelings in you. Whenever the temptation to binge arises, try indulging in your favorite activities like sports or connecting with an old friend or just go for a walk and finish up any unfinished household chores, since these are great stress busters. Once you are in control of your feeling of hunger, the next step is to do some research and decide upon the perfect diet that would suit you. The last and final step is to follow it with some will power. These above steps will definitely get you out of the vicious circle.

The Art of Laughter

If there is one thing we can’t get enough of in our lives it would be laughter. You know, the stomach scrunching, face hurting, knee bending, hurts-but-can’t-stop fits that once started become almost impossible to stop. Believe it or not, these infectious bouts of laughter are good for you in a number of ways.

When you hear laughter you should gravitate towards it. If people may start to think of you as creepy for suddenly joining their conversation, you can always show them this blog to save your reputation. Most of the time, people are more than willing to share funny experiences as it gives them a chance to relive the laughter. Laughing, and spending time with positive people tends to brighten ones outlook on life. Not only do the mental benefits of laughter include the ease of anxiety and fear, laughter also alleviates feelings of stress, and evokes positive feelings and moods. Laughter is good to have in all relationships as it increases bonding, promotes intimacy, helps eliminate feelings of tension and works to reduce anxiety.

Physically, laughter exercises parts of the body as well. The diaphragm, respiratory, abdominal, back, legs, and facial muscles are all exerted during a fit of giggles. Laughter works the blood vessels as it increases blood flow thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Even the immune system experiences a boost after a bout of laughter as immune cell productivity, and immunoglobulin levels increase. Laughter also shields us from the effects of stress and decreases the levels of stress hormones. After laughing, you may feel more relaxed as laughter provides a physical and emotional release.

It is said that a typical child laughs 300 times a day whereas an adult laughs less than twenty. How to find more to laugh about? Movies, television, and humorous literature are known to stir up some laughs time to time. Spending more time with your friends and going out to create more funny memories can also help. Comedy clubs not only add laughter to your life, they allow you to bring you friends with you too! Whenever you are facing a tough problem or are in difficult point in your life try to find humor in your situation, although irony is usually more apparent. Having thoughts as “In the future, this would be a great story to tell” or “My kid will never take me for granted again …after I lost him in the mall for three hours”, will keep you lighthearted and stress free so you can deal with your situation in a healthier manner and with more clarity.

True or False: Facts about Eating Disorders

People are influenced by societies expectations of what a person should look like. Most of the expectations put forth by the media are not realistic and people strive to accomplish a look which is unattainable. Some people attempt to reach their perfect body image by different methods including bulimia, anorexia, binge eating and purging. These weight loss methods are not healthy for any person and should be treated when discovered. Here are some facts about eating disorders; some of these are true and others are false. See if you already knew some of these facts:

  1. Only females have eating disorders.
    False: This is not so, 1 in 10 men are affected by eating disorders. It is just that women are more commonly seen with eating disorders.
  2. Eating Disorders can be overcome with perseverance it does not have to be a life time struggle.
    True: Although people who suffer from eating disorders still think about losing weight and food this does not stop them from being able to fight through this mental illness and learn to live a better healthier life. People who suffer from eating disorders eventually learn to value their life and slowly minimize their obsession on their body.
  3. Bulimia is a good way to lose weight.
    False: After binge eating bulimics do whatever they can to eliminate the food from their system. They may vomit, use laxatives or do excessive exercise but this is not effective. The food remains in the system and all that is being eliminated is fluids therefore bulimics may lose weight at first but eventually they gain all the weight back and sometimes even more.
  4. A person cannot die from bulimia.
    False: Although it is more common to hear of a person dying of anorexia, bulimic people are still at high risk of sudden death. Purging, laxatives and excessive exercise all can increase your risk of death due to the impact it has on your heart.
  5. Repeated weight-loss dieting impairs permanent weight control.
    True: The constant yo-yo of a person’s weight does not benefit their body. If a person drops a significant amount of weight in a short period of time it may remain of but within the year it will be regained and more will come with it.
  6. Eating disorders are about appearance and beauty.
    False: Many people assume since people are hoping to reach a goal weight that it is simply about their appearance but it is a mental illness. The reason for this is even when a person has reached their “target weight” they are still unable to feel happy and continue. This emotional illness has more to do with low self-esteem and control.
  7. You can’t suffer from more than one eating disorder.
    False: Bulimarexia is referred to individuals who alternate being anorexic and bulimic. It is noted that although these two eating disorders can occur independently almost half of all anorexics become bulimic.
  8. Compulsive overeating is as serious a problem as anorexia or bulimia.
    True: Compulsive overeating is as bad as bulimia or anorexia because this can lead to many different health issues. With consent overeating a person can eventually suffer from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and even depression.
  9. Kids under age 15 are too young to have an eating disorder.
    False: Shockingly children as early as 7 or 8 years old have been diagnosed with eating disorders. Although they may start this early they are usually not really noted until mid to late teens. For people suffering from anorexia the common age is 17 years old and for people suffering from bulimia is at the age of mid to late teens. Although they may be diagnosed by this age they often do not get treatment until their 30’s or 40’s.
  10. People with eating disorders do not eat candy or junk food of any kind.
    False: Surprisingly people with eating disorders commonly indulge in junk food as a way to increase their energy. Also since their bodies are not getting the nutrients they need, the body can crave for certain ingredients such as sodium therefore the person eats chips to fill the salty void their body desires.
